He told me to look for myself and sl i did. When i got to the website and sure enough they were there after payong them off 13 years earlier. The loans i received were all paid in full. I opened to see the loans not to have Nelnet consiladate them, without proof or my consent.

Left school oweing 13,200 plus intrest paid off in 2004 to Sallie Mae Navient a thief and now he says I owe 42,000. SARS report shows i missed paymentas during COVID and im in default!! On going issue with Nelnet.

Original review Jun 19, 2024
Good Morning Jeffrey/Nelnet (CEO),
I am writing to bring to your attention an issue with my account that has significantly impacted my credit profile. I have been a customer of Nelnet for over 10 years, and I have always valued the services provided by your company. Unfortunately, a review of my credit report revealed a 90-day lateness entry that I believe was wrongfully placed on my account during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The details of the account in question are as follows: Account Number: D00301**** Date of Lateness: 90 Days Late. I have always been diligent in making my payments on time, and this incorrect report has adversely affected my credit score, causing me undue stress and inconvenience.
I kindly request that Nelnet/Sloan remove the lateness entry from my credit profile. I believe this issue may have arisen from an administrative error because when I initially called, I was assured this account would be safe then was later told something different. I am hopeful that your team can resolve this for a loyal customer. On removal of this negative inquiry, I will pay off this balance in full. In the spirit of good faith and customer service, I trust that Nelnet/Sloan will take the necessary steps to correct this error.
I have attached copies of my payment records for your reference. If any additional information is required, please do not hesitate to contact me at 201-745-**** or Hughsmith808@***.com.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response and resolution.
Yours sincerely, Hugh Smith-Belcher
Cons:
  • Hard to get quality customer service

Preferred solution: Credit reporting updated, Account lateness's removed.

"a 90-day lateness entry that I believe was wrongfully placed on my account during the COVID-19".. Let me guess, you were late, and blaming Covid. Late is late and by removing it would be inaccurate reporting on their part.

Or, it could have been an administrative error due to staffing shortages during Covid. I'm sure this person can prove they paid on time. Stop assuming everyone on this site is a liar just because you are.

Resolved: Do not consolidate student loans with these frauds

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Consolidation processed, but the IDR application was lost.
  • - IDR not found; Navient and Nelnet loans show, balance $30,900; long wait times.
Updated by user Nov 05, 2023

Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with apology. After filing complaints to many different regulators and asking for Senator Kelly's office to assist, Nelnet FINALLY completed the student loan processing.

Despite this, I still strongly recommend borrowers avoid using Nelnet. If you opt to consolidate any federal student loans, look at the other available servicing companies.

Nelnet is a cesspool of incompetence and fraud. But for the inclusion of the regulators, this issue would remain unresolved.

Updated by user Oct 21, 2023

Nelnet is now falsifying business records. They claimed they never received the Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) application.

Now, they are saying they got it today (October 20, 2023). This is deliberately false information! The IDR application was completed simultaneously with the loan consolidation application on August 3, 2023. They are falsifying records to claim these applications were done at different times.

It is nothing more than an elaborate fraud. Now, I am stuck having to deal with Nelnet as my servicer as there is no provision to reverse the consolidation.

IT IS A DELIBERATE FRAUD, DO NOT CONSOLIDATE YOUR LOANS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR REPAYMENT RELIEF. IT IS A FRAUD AND THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF EVER GRANTING THE REPAYMENT RELIEF.

Updated by user Oct 05, 2023

I have contacted one of my Senators in this matter. While Nelnet is a private company, the underlying student loan debts are a federal program.

The feds just employ Nelnet as a servicer. I have every reason to believe that I will now be saddled with double the student loan debt and it will probably take months to get it resolved.

Original review Oct 05, 2023
So, as was necessary to apply for a specific income-driven repayment (IDR) plan with regards to my student loans, I was compelled to reconsolidate my loans as my prior servicer, Navient, is not part of the program any longer. As i was forced to make this change, I had selected Nelnet with the view that no one could be as bad as Navient.

WRONG! They are every bit as sleazy and totally incompetent as Navient. When a loan consolidation AND IDR applications are submitted simultaneously, how is it that the consolidation gets processed but the IDR application gets "lost"? Federal Student Aid's website acknowledges both applications were submitted, but Nelnet cannot find the IDR.

In truth, I doubt they can figure out how to use toilet paper. Making it worse, while Nelnet has acknowledged the funding of the new consolidated loans, Federal Student Aid shows I owe BOTH Navient AND Nelnet. My outstanding student loans have now doubled in this process. I went from about $15,450 to $30,900.

Obviously, it appears to be an accounting problem. However, this has been the case for weeks now. And Nelnet still claims there is no IDR application. When calling their so-called customer service number, you get the entire American industry standard message of ""we are having higher than normal call volumes." How in the heck does every single American company have "higher than normal call volumes" every single time you call any of them?

Anyway, their automated voice then told me to call back during normal business hours. For Thursdays, their own website says that the call center is open until 6PM EDT. I called at a 2:30 PM PDT. For those who don't know, there is a precisely 3 hour different between eastern daylight time and pacific daylight time.

Thus, I had called them at 5:30 PM EDT and their system told me to call back during normal business hours. So lets summarize:
1 - Lied about existence of IDR application,
2 - Failed to ensure full closeout of previous loans,
3 - Lied about hours of operation, and
4 - Illegally demanding payment that is not owed due to the IDR.
If I had to give a "pro statements":
1 - excellent at being impossible to work with, and
2 - maintain the industry standard of being chronic liars!
Loss:
$15000
Pros:
  • Excellence in lying
Cons:
  • Entire organization

Preferred solution: Full and complete compliance with ALL terms of the Income-Driven Repayment Application. Full and complete documentation that Navient has, in fact, been paid in full. Full waiver of any payments as this problem is entirely the doing of Nelnet.

User's recommendation: AVOID AT ALL COST. There are other smaller servicers. If you must consolidate your student loans, make sure it isn't with Nelnet.

Original review Oct 19, 2023

Neltet is steering their customers to make payments. The website does not allow deferments; it does not allow consolidations; the telephone service must consist of 1 person, because I called at 8am when they open, and the message was that it would take 11 minutes before answering; that was one hour ago and counting.

I've called this company multiple times and sat on hold for hours at a time

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Loans were transferred; I've called weekly for months and never reach anyone.
  • - Two payments were pulled; the site shows no information.

I've never spoken to a single person at this company, and I've called at least once a week for the last 4 months since my loans got transferred. I call and get put on hold, and during my 2-hour commute, I've never been able to talk to a single person.

It's part of my Monday morning commute and I always try in the afternoon as well with neither getting through to anyone. I've wanted to ask questions and see if modifications can happen. I'm trying to figure out why they pulled out two payments, and I wonder if legal action is the next step.

Furthermore, I've never had this with my two other student loan providers. The website circles back to the same 3 pages with no information and a phone number that I keep calling with not an ounce of success.

Cons:

Nelnet is still impossible to make any contact with. How do people stay in business like this?

Original review Nov 01, 2023

They don't answer their phones and say that it's because of unprecedented call volume. They do respond to your email w/a automated response, actually telling you that they just aren't going to answer your question/concern. NONE of their modes of contact actually work.

Preferred solution: someone to talk to
